Set in Stalin’s Soviet Union in 1938, “Confession” stars Rob Lowe as Alexei, a disillusioned former literature professor who is arrested and brought to the infamous Lubyanka Prison. There, Alexei faces interrogation by his brilliant and brutal former student, Vladimir, played by James Franco.
The new trailer offers a glimpse into the narrative, setting the tone for the film to unfold. In the film, Alexei must confront a devastating choice: betray his convictions or face the consequences of refusing to cooperate with a regime determined to crush dissent. The psychological drama examines faith, redemption, morality, and the courage required to defend one’s beliefs when doing so could cost everything.
The film boasts a cast packed with award-nominated talent, including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Nick Nolte, Emile Hirsch, Brad Dourif, Dean Norris, and Richard Brake. Czech filmmaker Václav Marhoul, whose credits include the acclaimed historical drama “The Painted Bird,” directed the film.
For Shapiro, “Confession” is an opportunity to tell a story with implications that extend well beyond its historical setting.

“I wrote Confession because I think we, as a whole, in the West have largely forgotten what matters,” he said. “We’ve forgotten the lessons of history: what communism actually did to people, and how seductive the materialist worldview still is. We’ve forgotten that virtue requires something above us, that God has to be guiding our choices, because if He isn’t, something else will. And we’ve forgotten what courage is for: standing up for what’s right when it costs you everything and no one is watching.”
“Where do our values come from? What are we willing to sacrifice for them? And what makes life meaningful, even in the face of cruelty and suffering? Those questions become very personal in the film,” Shapiro went on.
The film’s themes arrive as socialism gains renewed attention in American politics, with democratic socialism attracting a new generation of supporters. “Confession” offers a stark reminder of what happens when that ideology comes into full power.
“Confession” will arrive exclusively on The Daily Wire on November 11, alongside a one-night release in 100 theaters nationwide. These screenings are exclusive to Daily Wire members, and your only chance to see “Confession” on the big screen. Find a theater near you and buy a ticket at dailywire.com/findtheater.
