Immigrant grocery store owners are suing democratic socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over his plan to open government-run supermarkets, arguing the mayor\u2019s move will run them out of business.<\/p>\n

The Multicultural Business Coalition (MBC), which is comprised of immigrant-run businesses, filed two lawsuits Monday, including one representing \u201chundreds\u201d of grocers who are \u201cmembers of groups historically discriminated against,\u201d according to The New York Post. The city plans to open the first of five supermarkets next year.<\/p>\n

MBC\u2019s president Ken Roldan called the city\u2019s plan \u201ca direct assault on minority business by a mayor who claims to be a champion of disenfranchised poor and working-class New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday, Mamdani defended the proposal, saying he is \u201cfully confident in both the legality and the importance of our initiative,\u201d according to Fox Business.<\/p>\n

The second lawsuit alleges that the taxpayer-funded stores raise similar concerns surrounding the previous plans to open Walmarts in the Big Apple, which never came to fruition, the outlet reported. Opponents of Walmart\u2019s New York City expansion argued that the store would similarly put small storefronts out of business.<\/p>\n
