New York Magazine has cut ties with Ross Barkan, the columnist who lifted the opening of a Washington Post story for his hit piece on the Daily Wire, after a three-month editorial review found 67 of his columns failed to properly credit other writers.<\/p>\n

Within hours, Washington Post reporter Drew Harwell posted a side-by-side comparison showing Barkan\u2019s lede nearly matched the opening of Harwell\u2019s own May 9 story on Shapiro and the Daily Wire.<\/p>\n

It added that it would no longer publish his column and apologized \u201cto the writers whose work was not properly attributed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barkan told the New York Post the split was mutual. \u201cWe\u2019ve decided to end the column and I send all the best to New York Magazine,\u201d he said. He acknowledged the citation errors without addressing the plagiarism allegations directly. \u201cIn the course of nearly 250 pieces, there were times I should have been more careful with my citation. I\u2019m sorry about these errors and will work to do better, more careful work in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barkan described the campaign as an ideological project. \u201cIt was a progressive campaign. It was one that was proudly pro-Palestine, certainly \u2014 and I was willing to campaign in mosques and court the neighborhood\u2019s Arab community, which few politicians were willing to do. And so for all those reasons, he hopped on board, and the rest, in its own way, was history. We got to know each other quite well that summer,\u201d he said. Barkan went on to write a book on Mamdani\u2019s rise, The Revolutionary: Zohran Mamdani and the Remaking of American Politics<\/em>, had been scheduled by Random House for October 6.<\/p>\n

As of Saturday, the book appears to have been pulled from Random House\u2019s schedule. Its page on Penguin Random House\u2019s website no longer resolves, and listings at Bookshop.org, BookPal and Target have reverted to the placeholder \u201cUntitled 8221,\u201d credited to \u201cRandom House Group.\u201d<\/p>\n

Random House did not immediately respond to the Daily Wire\u2019s request for clarification on the book\u2019s status.<\/p>\n

Barkan is not leaving journalism. He said he is writing a new column for The Nation, which he said will launch in September.<\/p>\n
