Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said the policy is intended to protect children from experimental and potentially irreversible medical interventions. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cChildren deserve our protection, not experimental interventions that pose serious risks and convey no proven benefits,\u201d Oz said. \u201cBy cutting off federal funds for these sex-rejecting procedures, we\u2019re following the science, saving taxpayer dollars, and, most importantly, protecting children from potentially irreversible harm so they can truly flourish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

CMS said its decision followed a review of national and international research conducted by HHS that identified what the agency described as significant evidence gaps and safety concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n

CMS said the procedures can carry potentially permanent consequences, including infertility, impaired sexual function, diminished bone density, altered brain development, and other lasting physiological effects.<\/p>\n
